The Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS) E. Anthony Rankin Scholarship Program was started in 2022 to expose medical students to orthopaedics and its various subspecialties. Named after Dr. E. Anthony Rankin, the first Black President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and a strong driver of diversity in the field of orthopaedics, the E. Anthony Rankin Scholarship Program aims to diversify the field of orthopaedics by providing scholarships to gender- and racial-minority students interested in orthopaedics along with the opportunity to learn about military orthopaedic surgery at one of the leading military medical hospitals in the United States.
