Strategic Systems Programs STEM Leads Attend Offsite Training at the U.S. Naval Academy to Empower Local Communitiesfff

Annapolis, MD –– Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) coordinators and leads from the Department of Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) visited the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in October 2024 to participate in specialized STEM outreach training. The workshop, which was led by the Naval Academy’s STEM Center for Education and Outreach, provided SSP employees with a new approach and set of ideas to inspire interest in STEM careers for K-12 students.

SAN DIEGO, Ca–– Thousands of airshow spectators had the opportunity to witness the expeditionary capabilities of Navy Medicine encapsulated in a mobile medical tent filled with cutting-edge medical simulation equipment at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar’s ‘America’s Airshow,’ Sept. 27-29.

The expeditionary medical component at an air show is an unexpected, but highly attractive one that draws crowds of young spectators interested in learning more about the nature of Navy Medicine and its corresponding career fields.

PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD, Maine –– On May 3, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard STEM Outreach Program hosted the third annual Robotics Expo. Fifteen teams of students, grades 3-12, from across Maine and New Hampshire gathered in the shipyard gymnasium to demonstrate their robots, as well as explore a number of STEM activities meant to demonstrate work in various codes on the shipyard.

NAMRU San Antonio NREIP Interns hear from NASA CHAPEA Crew Member

Joint Base, SAN ANTONIO, Tx – JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (July 23, 2024) – Lt. Anca Selariu (center), a microbiologist assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, speaks with students participating in the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR) Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. Selariu was part of a four-person crew that took part in the NASA Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog’s (CHAPEA) first mission. The CHAPEA missions, simulated expeditions to the surface of Mars, aim to collect critical data which will inform future human expeditions to space. Selariu, a native of Romania, brought expertise in vaccines, prion transmission, gene therapy and infectious disease research to the CHAPEA mission. READ MORE

Robot Rumble: Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Philadelphia-Mentored Team Wins Big at FIRST Robotics Championship

HOUSTON, Tx–– A high school team mentored by Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD) recently won a world title at the FIRST Robotics Championship in Houston, Texas.

That team from the City of Brotherly Love — the RoboLancers of Central High School — earned the championship as part of an alliance with squads from Arizona, Missouri and Israel.

This day of recognition, established by President Ronald Reagan in 1982 through Proclamation 4954, serves as a powerful reminder of the critical contributions made by Navajo and other Native American code talkers.

ARLINGTON, Va –– The Department of the Navy (DoN) is celebrating the next generation of graduates from the Navy and Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Flight Academy.

Graduates of the academy recently participated in ceremonies at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware. Both institutions are historically black college and universities.

ATTENTION, SCIENCE FANS! NAVAL STEM LAUNCHES NEWEST NAVAL HORIZONS ESSAY CONTEST

ARLINGTON, Va – The Department of the Navy’s (DoN) Naval STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) program has gone live with the newest iteration of its popular Naval Horizons student essay contest for high school and college students.

First launched in 2020, Naval Horizons is a STEM educational video series from the DoN’s Naval STEM Coordination Office, located at the Office of Naval Research (ONR). It is a collection of more than 55 videos highlighting scientists and engineers, including active-duty military personnel, working within the DoN.

It aims to broaden the awareness of real-world science and technology challenges facing the Navy and Marine Corps today — and help illuminate the many pathways to STEM careers.

Mighty Mentorship: NAVY Civilian Employee Wins DOD STEM Advocacy Award

ARLINGTON, Va. – Growing up in Del Rio, Texas, a small town located on the U.S.-Mexico border, Juan Lafuente attended a high school that was short on resources but rich in caring, dedicated teachers — resulting in strong math and science programs.

Lafuente’s physics teacher, Mr. Francisco, was a powerful proponent of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and pushed his students to excel in such subjects. Seeing a similar passion in Lafuente, Mr. Francisco helped him apply and earn acceptance to summer engineering enrichment programs at the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.

2023 NAVAL HORIZONS CONTEST SEES GREATEST NUMBER OF WINNERS YET

ARLINGTON, Va.— The results are in for the recent Naval Horizons student essay contest. The organizer — the Department of the Navy’s (DoN) Naval STEM Coordination Office, which is located at the Office of Naval Research — is excited about the growth of the contest since its premiere several years ago.

In the 2023 Naval Horizons, 827 students were awarded a $200 cash prize each, the contest’s largest winner pool yet.

Naval Horizons is a STEM educational video series comprising more than 45 videos highlighting scientists and engineers, including active-duty military personnel, working within the DoN.
