Merging generations: Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, partners, to host first middle school robotics innovation challenge
DAHLGREN, Va. – Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) and its partners are expanding the innovation challenges from college and high school students and industry professionals to the next generation of scientists and engineers – middle schoolers.
“NSWCDD has world class scientists and engineers who are passionate about the work they do in support of the warfighter and want to share it with the younger generations through our STEM program,” said Melissa Smith, the division’s Acting Chief Technology Officer. “We are building a talent pipeline as we watch them work together.”

Building Young STEM Professionals: U.S. Navy’s SSP Outreach Teams Cultivate Talent during FIRST Robotics Events Nationwide
Washington Navy Yard – Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Outreach teams are hard at work developing, training, and mentoring young STEM professionals in schools across the nation in 2024.
January was filled with development opportunities for children in classrooms spanning the country—from the Nation’s Capital all the way to Colorado—and SSP’s STEM outreach teams partnered with teachers during multiple “FIRST Robotics” build season kickoff events.

Enchanting Debut: NAVFAC Northwest Unveils STEM Program, Brings Science and Engineering Activities to ‘Once Upon a STEAM’ Event for K-5 Students
BOTHELL, Wa. – NAVFAC Northwest launched its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program, with an inaugural “Once Upon a STEAM” fairytale-themed Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) community event held at Woodside Elementary School in Bothell, WA, on Nov. 30.
Volunteers from NAVFAC Northwest joined a diverse array of participants, including public and private enterprises, collegiate academia, high school robotics programs, and coding companies, among others whose booths featured interactive but fast-paced STEM-related activities tailored for students in kindergarten through 5th grade.

Student tours highlight STEM-related career paths at NUWC Division, Keyport
KEYPORT, Wa. – Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Keyport welcomed nearly 40 students from Central Kitsap High School for tours of several command facilities, Dec. 8, as part of its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics outreach program.
Sam De Lano, outreach coordinator for NUWC Division, Keyport’s STEM outreach program, said the goal of the tours was to foster interest in STEM-related careers among young people in the region.
“I think it’s important to expose students at this age to as many technical opportunities as possible so they can begin to formalize their ideas of what they want to be when they grow up,” said De Lano.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) Hosts First STEM Recruitment Event for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community
WEST BETHESDA, Md. – Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) recently hosted a tour for students from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), a college within RIT, to explore potential job and internship opportunities at the command. The group visited several engineering facilities, listened to overviews of each of the technical departments at Carderock and networked. The tour showed the students that the Division is not only a research base, but also a workplace that accommodates Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) employees with interpreting services.
