SMART Scholar Shibin Parameswaran is enabling computers to “see” and “understand” by developing complex, computer vision algorithms for images and video. Shibin holds a doctorate degree from the University of California, San Diego in Electrical Engineering and credits the SMART Program with enabling him to return to his studies. When Shibin accepted his position with the Department of Defense, he took an extended leave of absence from his Ph.D. program. Shibin said, the “SMART scholarship enabled me to return to graduate studies and pursue my Ph.D. while maintaining full-time employment.” Shibin is currently fulfilling his service commitment at the Naval Information Warfare Center Systems Command, Pacific. Serving as the technical lead for the machine learning and computer vision applied research group, Shibin oversees a team of 10 engineers and is responsible for the team’s strategic direction. Shibin continues to support SMART Scholars by serving as a mentor and mentors junior engineers through several machine learning groups.
