SMART scholar Ashley Gigon has a promising career in engineering. In her academic journey, she earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Providence College and bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. In addition, at Providence, Gigon excelled as a Division I student-athlete as a sprinter on the track team.

Gigon is currently pursuing her master’s in mechanical engineering at Columbia University and will join the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport Division, Rhode Island, as a Department of Defense civilian upon graduation.

This past summer, Gigon completed her SMART internship at The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Belgium. There, Gigon supported the Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics department analyzing how turbulence, wind direction, and angle of attack affect a 3D sonic anemometer on a drone. She shared, “I was fortunate to be surrounded by some of the world’s most unique and largest wind tunnels, turbomachinery, and testing facilities. It was a hands-on experience like no other.” Further, Gigon states that, “I have personally benefitted from the SMART Program by making new connections with other scholars and mentors from around the world. I have learned a tremendous amount from my experience and from my studies which I will continue to benefit from.”

Beyond academia and work, Gigon’s love for running and travel adds depth to her experiences. From her Division I track and field days to her recent SMART internship in Europe, she finds joy in both pursuits.
