Meet SMART scholar Dylan Astrup, a mechanical engineering student who recently graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, Arizona. Prior to graduation, Astrup completed his summer internship at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD) in California, which is part of Naval Sea Systems Command – the largest of the U.S. Navy’s five system commands. Astrup actively contributed to NSWC PHD maintenance planning and engineering department and excelled, earning certificates in reliability centered and lifecycle maintenance.

Beyond the invaluable experience of his summer internship, Astrup acknowledges the advantages of being a SMART scholar. He attributes his high academic ambitions to the support and structure of the SMART scholarship, which he said, “has massively benefited me and my academic career by allowing me to focus on my studies and my future career and spending more time on the things I love, like alternative energy projects.”

Upon graduation, Astrup started working as a U.S. Department of Defense civilian at NSWC PHD. There, he is committed to making valuable contributions to the advancement of sustainable technology, utilizing his expertise and knowledge in mechanical engineering and work experience gained during his internship.

Outside of work, Astrup enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and surfing alongside his friends, as well as cooking.
