Whether visiting light houses or conducting underwater robotics research, SMART Scholar Jacqueline Jermyn has a passion for the sea. Selected for the 2020 cohort, Jacqueline is currently studying for her Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Florida State University. After graduation, she will complete her service agreement at the Naval Surface Warfare Center- Panama City Division. Jacqueline leveraged guidance from her Naval Surface Warfare Center mentor, Dr. Joseph Walsh, to inform her dissertation research on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and learn new technology. Jacqueline says Dr. Walsh “recommended that I learn the Robot Operating System that provides a framework for interfacing navigation and machine learning modules for AUV navigation. Elements of AUV navigation are mapping, localization, and path planning.” Grateful to be mentored by research scientists who are conducting cutting-edge research in this area, Jacqueline is excited that her future research will be integrated into other engineers’ work to support development of applied sensing, robotics, and signal processing for littoral defense.
