Meet Joshua Castillo, a SMART scholar with a passion for both national security and community service. Joshua is pursuing a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science and engineering at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA, driven by a deep-seated interest in technology and its applications in defense. Upon graduation, Joshua will become a Department of Defense civilian at the  Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) in Panama City, Florida. Here, his role as a computer scientist will involve deploying, maintaining, and securing critical systems used by sailors and marines. What I love most about my job in computer science within the defense sector is the profound impact it has on national security,” Joshua shares. “Working with cutting-edge technologies and solving complex problems not only keeps my daily tasks engaging and intellectually stimulating but also gives me the satisfaction of knowing my work helps protect and serve our nation.” During his internship at NSWC PCD, Joshua has made significant contributions to system security, particularly through his work with Microsoft Defender for Identity (MDI) and Endpoint (MDE). MDI and MDE are advanced cybersecurity tools designed to protect against identity-based threats and ensure endpoint security across networks. Joshua’s research, deployment of these tools, and the development of troubleshooting guides have resolved critical issues and improved system configurations, ensuring that these essential technologies function reliably. Joshua credits the SMART Scholarship for much of his success, acknowledging the crucial support it provides. As both a student and parent, the scholarship has provided him with the financial stability to focus on his studies and career development. “The SMART Scholarship has been instrumental in shaping my education and career. Upon graduation, it guarantees a job that offers real-world experience and networking opportunities with top professionals in the defense sector,” he notes. Beyond his professional achievements, Joshua is deeply committed to giving back to his community. He serves on the Scholar Leadership Council and Advisory Board for Generation Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting teen parents in pursuing higher education. He is also a member of the University Accountability Board at ODU. Joshua enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and three sons, engaging in activities like camping, hiking, and martial arts. He is also deeply involved in his local church, serving on the outreach team and working passionately with at-risk youth and people experiencing homelessness.
