SMART scholar Marshall Sowell’s interest in technology and its evolving landscape led him to pursue electrical engineering, a field where he could not only witness, but also contribute, to the technological advancements shaping the world. Encouraged by mentors and professors, he pursued his master’s in applied electromagnetics at Oklahoma State University through the SMART Program.

Joining SMART was a pivotal moment for Marshall. Recognizing the program’s comprehensive support and opportunities, he calls it the “Lamborghini of scholarships.” SMART provided Marshall a clear path to his current role as a Department of Defense civilian, allowing him to work on unparalleled projects and technologies that are critical to national security.

Now, as a Phase 2 SMART scholar, Marshall is fulfilling his civilian service commitment as an electrical engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. His days are filled with exciting challenges unique to the field of electromagnetics. He works tirelessly to resolve complex electromagnetic interference and compatibility problems, a task that involves managing and mitigating interference that can affect electronic devices and systems, ensuring they operate harmoniously without disrupting each other. Marshall’s work is critical in ensuring the smooth operation and safety of various military technologies.

Throughout his academic and career journey, Marshall emphasizes the importance of mentorship and support. The wisdom and encouragement from family and mentors have been instrumental in his success. He states, “I can look everybody in the eye and say that with the degrees I have, I’m doing exactly what I want to do. I love what I do.” Marshall now aims to inspire and guide future generations of engineers, emphasizing the importance of determination, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of one’s passions.
