Physics is about exploring the fundamental rules that govern all of the systems we exist in. It allows us to investigate problems from the ground up, and connect every complex process to the same basic principles. SMART scholar, Ryan Wilmington, is exploring how light properties interact with matter in his role as an optical physicist at the Naval Information Warfare Center, Atlantic Division in Charleston, South Carolina. Ryan credits his mentor for teaching him the tricks of the trade, helping him understand the roles a physicist can play in non-academic career paths, and developing his communication skills. During his internship, Ryan conducted unique microscopy experiments on atomically thin materials. This project helped him advance his knowledge of optical design and signal detection techniques. Ryan notes that, “It goes without saying that COVID-19 has presented many unexpected challenges this year. Given that, I feel uniquely privileged to have the support of the SMART Program which has allowed me to focus on safely pursuing my research and career goals. Knowing that SMART has my back and is invested in my success is an incredibly important aspect of why I’ve been able to accomplish so much this year despite the circumstances.” When he’s not in the lab, Ryan enjoys making music and has learned to play cello, piano, ukulele, guitar and bass.
